Vimpel Communications posts 4th-quarter profit, reversing loss

Russian telecommunications company Vimpel Communications posted a fourth-quarter net profit Thursday, reversing a year-ago loss as it added new mobile and broadband subscribers.

The company earned $283 million, or 27 cents per American Depositary share, up from a loss of $16.1 million, or 81 cents per ADS, in the same period a year earlier.

The quarter's revenue declined 10 percent to $2.31 billion from $2.56 billion in the period a year earlier.

For the full year, Vimpel posted a profit of $1.1 billion, or $1.08 per ADS, up from $524.3 million, or 52 cents per ADS, in 2008. Its annual revenue fell 14 percent to $8.7 billion from $10.12 billion.

The company said it added 3.6 million new mobile subscribers in 2009 for a total of 64.6 million and 2.3 million broadband subscribers, an 85 percent increase.

The company's U.S.-traded shares slid Thursday by $1.27, or 7 percent, to close at $16.77. The results were released before the market opened.
