Kastor among USATF's new board of directors
USA Track and Field overhauled its board of directors Wednesday, announcing 12 new members that includes Olympic marathon bronze medalist Deena Kastor.
The newly composed board incorporates a diverse range of members, from officials, company executives and attorneys to coaches and athletes.
President Stephanie Hightower and IAAF council member Robert Hersh were already part of the board as specified by USATF bylaws. There will be one more position named by USATF's member organizations in the coming weeks, bringing the total board to 15 members.
The national governing body of track whittled the size of its board from 31 under pressure from the U.S. Olympic Committee. The USOC threatened sanctions, including cutting off funding, if the USATF did not reform what was widely seen as a bloated and unwieldy structure.
Kastor became one of only two American women to medal in the Olympic marathon at the 2004 Games in Athens. Joining Kastor on the board as athlete members are race walker Philip Dunn and discus thrower Aretha Hill Thurmond.
The other new board members are former triple jump world-record holder Willie Banks; former superintendent of Denver Public Schools Dr. Evie Dennis; Elizabeth Phillips, president of Custom Event Marketing, Inc.; sports executive Steven Miller; business executive and former world-class miler Steve Holman; NASCAR consultant Max Siegel; USATF officials Kim Haines and Kenneth Taylor; and former health care industry executive Jack Wickens.
"I am extremely optimistic about working with the new board," USATF CEO Doug Logan said in a statement. "All are strong, independent-minded individuals who see the big picture. With their collective capacity to put the best interests of the sport first, we have a bright future."
