Jamaica to review nurses' demand for higher wages

More than 100 registered nurses in Jamaica have suspended a strike after the government agreed to review their demands for higher wages and more benefits.

Labor Minister Pearnel Charles says Prime Minister Bruce Golding will announce details on Monday.

The health ministry says hospitals were forced to cancel elective surgeries and discharge non-critical patients. It says hospitals in rural Clarendon and Manchester parishes were most affected by the strike, with senior staff taking emergency cases.

Nurses say Golding's administration has reneged on pre-election promises to double their salaries and restructure positions.

The 24-hour strike began Wednesday.
