FTSE shares end slightly up

Stocks in London rose fractionally on Monday as investors became remained optimistic over upbeat data and corporate results from last week.

The FTSE 100 index of leading shares gained 0.21 percent to 4,586.13 points.

Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) was the most widely traded stock, seeing 116 million units change hands, followed by the Vodafone, which saw 102 million shares switch owners.

Publisher Pearson was the biggest winner, up 73 pence -- or 12.05 percent -- to finish at 679, followed by platinum producer Lonmin, which gained 58 pence -- or 4.67 percent -- to stand at 846.5.

The biggest blue chip casualty was packaging manufacturer Rexam, which shed 39.25 pence -- or 12.12 percent -- to finish at 284.5, followed by venture capital group 3i Group, which lost 10 pence -- or 3.81 percent -- to end at 252.75.

Elsewhere, the pound ended higher against the dollar and the euro.

Sterling was worth 1.6495 US dollars at 15:58 BST, from 1.6421 at Friday's close, while it climbed to 1.1597 euros from 1.1569 over the same period.
