How the major stock indexes fared on Wednesday
Another wave of selling hit stocks Wednesday in response to growing fears that Europe has no quick fix for its debt crisis. The Dow Jones industrial average fell about 67 points after having been down as much as 186. It was the Dow's ninth drop in 12 days. The Standard & Poor's 500 index neared a 10 percent drop from the 2010 trading high it reached last month.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 66.58, or 0.6 percent, to 10,444.37.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 5.75, or 0.5 percent, to 1,115.05.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 18.89, or 0.8 percent, to 2,298.37.
For the week:
The Dow is down 175.79, or 1.7 percent.
The S&P is down 20.63, or 1.8 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 48.48, or 2.1 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is up 16.32, or 0.2 percent.
The S&P is down 0.05, or 0.004 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 29.22, or 1.3 percent.
