Scorecard for the major stock market indexes
Investors' ambivalence about earnings reports gave Wall Street a mixed performance Friday. Traders pounced on companies showing signs of life and dumped companies whose quarterly results fell short of expectations. Better-than-forecast results from Google Inc. helped lift technology shares while disappointment with General Electric Co.'s results reinforced investors' concerns about the depths of the recession and weighed on the Dow Jones industrial average.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 45.24, or 0.56 percent, to 8,077.56.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 4.45, or 0.54 percent, to 831.95.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 11.80, or 0.81 percent, to 1,477.29.
For the week:
The Dow is down 203.66, or 2.46 percent.
The S&P is down 18.17, or 2.14 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 52.04, or 3.40 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 698.83, or 7.96 percent.
The S&P is down 71.30, or 7.89 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 99.74, or 6.32 percent.
